Verified Purchase. This was a mistake for – she presumes you know stuff right from the beginning. Yes, it tells you everything you could ever want to know which is great if you know what you’re doing, but I knew nothing, and the frustration of not finding the answers reduced me to tears. So I got this book instead.
If you are a beginner and you don’t really like computers or anything techie, this is the one for you. Some people may find Scott’s folksy style and jokes put their teeth on edge and that’s fair enough: even though I’m a massive fan and have now got about 6 of his books, I find it can get a bit wearing.
But it’s a small price to pay IMO – and if really bothers you, just skip over his intros. Each topic is clearly labelled so you can find it easily. Then there’s a step by step break down of what you need to do, with a screenshot or two for every step.
It’s like following a very simple recipe and he never makes assumptions about what you know or in my case, don’t know. He might say something like, if you know how to do X, then you can skip this bit, but he never presumes you know. Another thing I like a lot is when he shows how he works on an image and why he does what he’s doing and compares the before and after. Finally, at the back of the book is a tear out grey card that you can use for white balancing which is really useful if you don’t already have one.
BTW Phil Steele’s website has a brilliant video on how to use a grey card and Lightroom to batch white-balance a series of pics. I use this method all the time because it’s so easy and effective. This is yet another book by Kelby that enables the user to find in the index what needs to be achieved and immediately discover how to do it – without having to find earlier pages to make sense of the method.
This avoids the frustration of having to start at the first page and wade through much preamble to know how to do simple tasks. As one gains confidence in doing simple tasks the earlier pages become relevant and a firm basis for organising ones images becomes clear. This attribute separates the book from many others and makes it usable from day one by a complete novice.
Lightroom is not yet able to do all that is possible in Photoshop. It is however very quick to use when one has acquired the skill to use it. Processing hundreds of images becomes a doddle with only a few needing to be transferred to Photoshop at the click of a button for minor adjustments or major to be achieved. Later where an image needs additions, removal or altering the appearance of individual images then Photoshop is the answer.
I have been using Lightroom for ten years since its first issue. I have never regretted updating to each successive issue.
What a brilliant book! I have to say that I have learnt so much by reading this book. The writing is not full of jargon it’s just like someone explaining it to you step by logical step in a way that says “this is how I would do it but here are other options too”. Scott is funny and that comes through in his writing style, I love the introductions to each chapter which have nothing to do with the subject but just kind of fit!
It is a big book but if you just work your way through it with your computer and a note pad by your side you will be an absolute master of Lightroom in no time at all. I remember trying to get through one of the Dummies books before but it made no sense, this book makes absolute sense from the very start. Highly recommended to all you budding photographers who want to master the beast that is Lightroom and make your photos stunning A good book, reviews how to get things done in a straight forward way, does not cover everything but hey LR can do most things.
I only use PS when I get stuck, this book use real live examples to do things his way, give the key strokes and the short cuts. PS is way to big a programme to dive into. That said, the one improvement I can suggest is a summary or index of new features. I especially like the way Scott not just explains each feature, but tells the reader how HE uses it or doesn’t use it, but rather uses some other feature or technique instead. He also does a great job of teach workflow: which Photoshop tools to use in what sequence; and you get to practice what he’s showing you using the exact same images he’s using in the book Scott provides link to download site.
Scott has the gift of being a really good teacher, I love all his books, will buy more in the future, gladly recommend to others. Jordan Top Contributor: Fountain Pens. Not his usual quality. I expected a book that explained how to do detailed photo retouching in Photoshop. I first purchased a Scott Kelby book around Been used PS since v4. I have learned most everything that I know from Mr.
I am a 30 yr professional photographer and have taught numerous workshops collegiate level and High School art Teachers and I usually taught right out of his material.
I hadn’t purchased the newest and greatest for a couple years and thought that perhaps I am not leveraging all that could from PS CC I have not been disappointed. I’m an advanced amateur and have used Photoshop from very early days. I’ve learned a lot from this book. For example, one frequent problem in landscape photography is the brightness range from the sky to the land. I just lived with this issue, but Kelby suggests using the graduated filer which acts like a neutral density gradient filter.
One problem of Photoshop is that there are many features that you just have to know about, that the menu system does not show them in obvious ways. This book doesn’t show you them all see Adobe’s reference manual , but it shows you how to do lots of useful things efficiently. For a better understanding, take a look at the Table of Contents here on the Amazon web page. Which is only good if this is your first Kelby book. Scott Kelby is the man. I have read maybe 5 books of his?
Idk, lost count. He’s never let me down I’m sure for the ultra new user there’s a surprise in here, I just couldn’t find it. I’m still giving him 3 stars out of loyalty- I haven’t read the RAW section.
I’m really counting on his promise to deliver hidden CC secrets. But I’ve shot RAW exclusively for years now Oh, and dude. The cover models’ skin looks plastic. Not the look you were going for, surely?
Moreno Tagliapietra Top Contributor: Photography. I am a part-time pro photographer and have been using Scott’s Photoshop books since he began writing them together with the encyclopedic books by Martin Evening.
Some people don’t like his style but what is relevant to me is the high quality of information he offers. Other commenters complain that a large part of the book is dedicated to Camera Raw but Scott years ago began rightfully stressing the fact that most of the picture-wide processing should be done in Camera Raw before moving to Photoshop for selective adjustments.
For people who agree on this image processing strategy the book is very valuable. The 4 stars are due to the microscopic size of text. Kelby is the best. If you really want to learn about Photoshop buy his books.
This new edition is very user friendly like all of his other books. He makes complicated aspects of the program seem easy.
This is a fine book and one worth buying. For example, one of the essential features of Photoshop is layers. Layers is what makes editing in Photoshop nondestructive.
Yet the book gives relatively scant coverage of layers. Don’t get me wrong. This book will teach you plenty about editing. Just don’t expect a thorough Photoshop manual. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I am a fan of Scot Kelby’s books, they are great to follow or to use when in trouble.
I bought this soon after the release of Photoshop CC version, which seemed to have released lots of modified approaches to editing issues that I used a lot. I have found this book very useful indeed – for me it’s much better that the myriad of videos available online.
I’ve used Scot Kelby’s books before and find them great. Once one gets used to Scott Kelby’s quirky style, this is a very informative book and I wouldn’t be without it. With that caveat, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. First off let me say I’m not trying to sell more books for Mr Kelby. Having said that I would recommend anyone who is just getting started using Photoshop CC, to get hold of a least a couple of his earlier Photoshop books.
While I think this a great book and well worth buying, I’m finding that I keep having to refer back to the earlier books to remind myself of some of the basics. So definitely buy this book if your using Photoshop CC, but as I said make sure you have a couple of the earlier ones to help with the basics if your new to it.
The one thing I don’t like is that this came out in and the Camera Raw version is 9. One person found this helpful. Excellent book in plain laguage which veers towards the very basic at times so excellent for total beginers but even the expert will find tips and hints that he has missed.
Scott Kelby knows how to write and instruct, a great teacher. It is a edition which really makes no difference to learning PS CC most everything applies even after the upgrade. The nicest part of this book is you can skip around to the chapters and information you need. Everything is well layed out and presented in an easy format to read and understand. A great book that still works!
